Production of the Daihatsu Copen will officially end in August 2026, bringing to a close one of Japan’s most distinctive kei roadsters. Yet this isn’t the final word, as Daihatsu has already hinted that a new generation is in the works, though its positioning could shift compared to the current model.

The original Copen arrived in 2002 with a compact two-door body and an electrically retractable hardtop, a first for the kei car segment. Production wrapped up in 2012, leaving a short gap before the second generation launched in 2014. This version introduced sharper styling and modular body panels, while keeping within kei dimensions.
The standout variant came in 2019 with the Copen GR Sport, adding chassis tweaks and sportier design details. Now, after more than a decade on sale, the curtain is slowly drawing on this generation.
A Farewell Worth Marking

Daihatsu won’t let the Copen fade away quietly. In April 2026, the company will host a special nationwide farewell event in Japan, celebrating loyal customers and communities connected to the car. Locations will be announced gradually via a dedicated website as the date approaches.
More importantly, the company has confirmed that work is under way on a future Copen. While no timeline has been announced, the Vision Copen concept shown at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show offers a clear glimpse of what might be ahead.
A Concept Pointing Forward
The concept looks like a modern interpretation of the original Copen with round headlights and clean surfacing. However, it has a significantly larger footprint stretching to 3,835 mm (151 inches) long. This suggests that Daihatsu might want to avoid the limitations of the kei car segment and give us a worthy competitor of the next Mazda MX-5.

Another interesting bit is that the concept came fitted with a 1.3-liter three-cylinder engine running on carbon-neutral fuel. This will be more potent than the tiny 658 cc powertrain of the previous generations, with a rumored output of at least 150 hp (112 kW / 152 PS). Furthermore, there are unconfirmed reports about a Suzuki Cappuccino roadster, and a Toyota SF-R baby sports car that could share the same underpinnings.
Below is the statement issued by Daihatsu regarding the end of the current Copen’s production:
