Check Out These Wild Toyota Hilux Builds
  • Toyota has shown several modified versions of the new Hilux pickup in Thailand.
  • These included off-road builds, an overlanding camper conversion and a sporty truck.
  • The company is already offering a list of genuine accessories via its official website.

Toyota has just unveiled the new generation of the Hilux, but the midsize pickup has already been modified in a quest to highlight its personalization potential. A number of rugged builds were unveiled during the official launch of the pickup truck in Thailand, fitted with a mix of genuine accessories and aftermarket bits.

The stand included at least six modified examples of the truck, targeting different customers. One of them was fitted with accessories from the GR Parts catalogue, including a black grille, a red skid plate, glossy black fender extensions, branded side steps, and black wheels shod in grippy tires.

Other available goodies from the Gazzo Racing division include roof and bed racks, plus the signature red mudflaps. In the future, Toyota is expected to roll out a GR Sport version of the new Hilux with tougher looks, performance and chassis upgrades.

Interestingly, the GR Parts model was not the most impressive Hilux of the show. The company showed an off-road focused build modified by Australian tuner ARB. This one came with a generous lift kit, a rugged front bumper with cut-outs for clearance, extra LEDs, a roof rack, a side awning, and a bed rack for mounting special equipment.

Still, what caught our eye was an overlanding camper conversion of the Hilux with a tent mounted on a custom bed rack. The adventure-packed model came with a lifted suspension, all/terrain tires, beadlock wheels, rock sliders, a skid plate with integrated lights, an LED bar on the roof, and an aerodynamic snorkel.

Another rugged Hilux build featured a unique matte gray/red livery and came fitted with a snorkel, protective gear, raised suspension, new wheels, a carbon-plated tailpipe, and mudflaps.

Unlike the European and Australian versions of the pickup that are exclusively available in double-cab bodystyle, the Thai-spec model is also offered in Standard Cab and Smart Cab configurations. The former served as a base for a cool build with a lift kit, black wheels, white and black livery, extended mirrors, and a metal cage structure increasing the capacity of the exposed cargo area.

Last, but not least, there was a single sporty Hilux featuring a yellow wrap with carbon texture for the hood and tailgate, a lowered suspension, new wheels and uprated brakes. Despite the looks, the model retained the stock 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine with 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS). Note that depending on the region, the new Hilux will also be available with mild-hybrid diesel, gasoline, and fully electric powertrain options.

Available Accessories

The official website of Toyota Thailand has a long list of accessories for the truck. These include extra plastic cladding for the doors, beefier wheel arch extensions, a selection of door handle covers, a rear spoiler, a stainless steel exhaust pipe, bed liners, underbody protection plus metal-style garnish for the taillights, tailgate, hood, and bumper intakes. For the interior, the company offers more durable floor mats, aluminum skid plates, and storage solutions.

Thailand has a prominent tuning culture, which is why most automakers advertise the customization capabilities of their trucks. Judging from the aforementioned builds and the popularity of the Hilux, we expect to see a lot of interesting conversions in the future.
