Toyota’s Baby SUV Goes Dark And Gets A Sleeker Grille
  • The Toyota Yaris Cross Nightshade edition debuts in Thailand.
  • The SUV gains a redesigned grille and dark exterior accents.
  • It retains the stock self-charging hybrid powertrain with 110 hp.

Toyota sells two different Yaris Cross models depending on the market, both occupying the subcompact SUV segment. The larger of the two just got a new flagship Nightshade edition in Thailand, featuring a semi-covered grille, dark trim, and generous equipment.

The Yaris Cross for Southeast Asian markets was introduced in Indonesia in 2023. Its aggressive LED headlights, grille, and bumper intakes make it look like a baby version of the pre-facelifted Highlander.

The Nightshade edition is distinguished by a unique “Metro Stylish” grille featuring body-colored trim behind the Toyota emblem and a new pattern underneath. This change has a positive effect on the styling of the crossover that could easily pass for a subtle facelift.

Other highlights of the Nightshade include black 18-inch alloy wheels and matching exterior accents. The glossy black treatment extends on the plastic cladding, intake garnish, skid plates, window surrounds, mirrors, spoiler, and tailgate. The color palette is limited to the pictured Cement Gray Metallic and the Platinum White Pearl, always combined with a black roof.

In the dark-themed interior, the seats are upholstered in synthetic leather, while the door cards, steering wheel, center console and gear knob are covered by genuine leather.

The Nightshade is based on the high-spec trim of the Yaris Cross and comes packed with features. Standard equipment includes a fixed panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, a 10.1-inch infotainment display, an electric tailgate, and the Toyota Safety Sense ADAS suite.

Unlike the global model that rides on the TNGA-B platform, the Southeast Asian-spec Yaris Cross is underpinned by the Daihatsu-sourced DNGA architecture. It is also 130 mm (5.1 inches) longer than the European Yaris Cross, stretching to 4,310 mm (169.7 inches).

In the Thai market, the SUV is exclusively available with self-charging hybrid powertrain generating a combined 110 hp (82 kW / 112 PS) from a 1.5-liter Dual VVT-i engine and a single electric motor that’s semt to the front axle via an E-CVT automatic transmission. This setup is common across the lineup, including the special edition that doesn’t get any performance or chassis upgrades.

The Yaris Cross Nightshade is available to order in Thailand, where it is priced from 919,000 baht ($28,800). This makes it the most expensive trim, with the standard lineup costing between 789,000-899,000 baht ($24,700-28,100).
