What Looks Like A Regular R34 GT-R Isn’t, And It’ll Cost You Over $600K

What Looks Like A Regular R34 GT-R Isn’t, And It’ll Cost You Over $600K
  • Only a few dozen Tommykaira GT-Rs were ever produced.
  • Exterior upgrades include a reshaped fascia and rear wing.
  • Auction listing shows just 12,546 miles since it was built.

In the crowded world of Japanese tuning, few names carry the same weight as Tommykaira. Long admired for its distinctive approach and finely judged modifications, the company carved out its legacy by reimagining Nissan Skylines into something sharper, rarer, and faster.

One of its most elusive creations, the Tommykaira R-Z based on the R34 GT-R, has just surfaced for sale, offering a rare chance to step into peak-era tuning philosophy.

This R-Z isn’t just another modified Skyline. It’s one of only a handful ever produced, with reports suggesting just a “few dozen” exist, and it began life as a GT-R V-Spec before undergoing a full visual and mechanical transformation at the hands of Tommykaira.

The exterior updates begin up front, where a reshaped fascia, revised air intakes, and new grilles give the Skyline a more focused look. A chin spoiler finishes it off, adding some edge without tipping into theatrics.

Widened fenders and extended side skirts add to the drama, while the rear is anchored by a fixed, dual-pane wing set atop aluminum uprights. While some Skyline purists probably prefer the look of a completely stock one, the changes made by Tommykaira certainly aren’t over the top.

Engine Overhaul with Purpose

More exciting than the visuals is what’s going on under the hood. Nissan’slegendary 2.6-liter twin-turbocharged RB26DETT engine has been upgraded to deliver 530 hp, well beyond the factory rating of 276 hp and a substantial jump even from its real-world stock output, which hovered closer to 320.

Tommykaira was able to extract this extra power by increasing the displacement to 2.7-liters, adding a custom crankshaft, and installing large turbochargers.

Plenty of other upgrades were also made. For example, there are new Bilstein shocks and AP-Racing brakes with six-piston calipers. The sports coupe also sits on distinctive 19-inch forged magnesium wheels with a stunning gold finish.

The car is being offered for auction through Bingo, with the sale scheduled for early next month. The listing notes it has covered just 20,191 km (12,546 miles) since new, with only 2,000 km (around 1,200 miles) added by the current owner over the last 15 years. It’s expected to fetch between 95 million yen ($603,000) and 105 million yen ($666,000).
