AMG’s GLE 53 Is Getting A Facelift, But It’ll Face A Fully-New BMW X5 M60

AMG’s GLE 53 Is Getting A Facelift, But It’ll Face A Fully-New BMW X5 M60
  • AMG has a revised GLE 53 SUV heading to showrooms for MY27.
  • The fourth-gen GLE’s overhaul brings Mercedes’ star-shaped DRLs.
  • Expect a bigger grille that references the one on the new GLC EV.

There are some big changes taking place in Mercedes’ design department, where long-standing creative chief Gorden Wagener has just announced he’s stepping down after almost 30 years with the brand. But we’ll still be seeing his handiwork for a while yet, including on this refreshed AMG GLE 53.

Due to make its debut in 2026 for MY27, the sporty midsize SUV can trace its DNA back to the launch of the fourth-generation GLE in 2018, while the AMG 53 version was unveiled a year later.

The GLE Mk4 has already had one refresh in 2023, but age and the need to keep pace with other, newer Mercedes models means it’s time for another round of tweaks for both the upright SUV and the coupe spinoff.

One of the easiest of those changes to spot when one rolls by in fall 2027 will be the star-shaped DRLs Mercedes and its AMG division are rolling our across their respective lineups. They made their debut on the rear of the E-Class but are now being applied to both ends of new cars at facelift time.

New grille gains a frame

Potentially just as noticeable will be the new grille that takes pride of place between those front DRLs. Though covered up in these images by disguise, it’s expected to be considerably bigger than the one on the current GLE, and could draw inspiration from the grille on the new electric GLC with EQ Technology unveiled in September.

Beyond an increase in size, the new grille will bring a frame, something missing altogether from the current GLE in both Mercedes and AMG-badged forms. Expect to see changes to the bumpers, too, and possibly new wheel designs, but since this is only a facelift the sheetmetal won’t change.

More power for the MHEV inline six

Also likely to be carried across mostly intact is the mild-hybrid 3.0-liter inline six slotted beneath the hood of today’s GLE 53. It currently makes 429 hp (435 PS), but AMG’s engineers will probably find a few more horses hiding down the bores in time for the 2026 debut.

They’re going to need to use every trick they can to deflect attention from the G65-code BMW X5 which launches in 2026, also for MY27. With BMW’s modern Neue Klasse design language and a speedy M60 performance variant in the works, the new X5 threatens to make the geriatric GLE look old hat.
