- The Fiat Argo is set to adopt the Grande Panda’s design and underpinnings.
- It will likely be fitted with a naturally-aspirated 1.0-liter Flex Fuel engine.
- The current generation might remain available as the Argo Urban.
Fiat is preparing to overhaul its South American lineup, starting with a new generation of the Argo hatchback. Our spy photographers have caught a heavily camouflaged prototype of the model during winter testing, revealing similarities with an existing Fiat model.
The current Argo was introduced in 2017 and received a facelift in 2022, sharing its underpinnings with the Cronos sedan, as well as the Pulse and Fastback SUVs. The new generation is not an evolution of the previous model, but an all-new design based on the Fiat Grande Panda that is already on sale in Europe.
Review: New Fiat Grande Panda Hybrid Makes Budget Look Cool Again
Despite the camouflage covering every inch of the prototype’s bodywork, the proportions and the position of the lights are quite familiar. While some expected a few market-specific features, patent drawings on Brazil’s National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) suggest that the Argo will look identical to the Grande Panda, minus the stampings on the doors and tailgate.
SH Proshots
Given the budget nature of the Argo, we expect the base models to feature halogen headlights, steel wheels, and a screen-less setup in the cabin, leaving the pixelated LEDs, fancy alloy wheels, and digital cockpit for high-spec trims.
Same Platform, Different Engine
The subcompact hatchback with a crossover stance will ride on Stellantis’ Smart Car architecture, just like the Fiat Grande Panda, Citroen C3, C3 Aircross, and Opel Frontera. Unlike the European models which are fitted with a turbo 1.2-liter engine in non-electrified and mild-hybrid forms, the South American model will utilize a different powertrain from Stellantis’ parts bin.

According to the latest reports, the new Argo will be powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.0-liter three-cylinder Flex Fuel engine (gasoline/ethanol), which is good for 72-77 hp in the current generation. It could also be available with the turbocharged 1.0-liter engine featuring a 12V micro-hybrid system that produces 125-130 hp. In any case, power will be transmitted to the front wheels.
Future Plans
The Fiat Argo is expected to debut in South America sometime in the coming months. Local media report that the new generation will coexist with its predecessor, which is expected to receive the “Argo Urban” moniker posing as a more affordable alternative.
