Nissan Killed The Navara In Europe

Nissan Killed The Navara In Europe, Now A 402-HP PHEV From China Might Take Its Place

  • The Frontier Pro pairs a 1.5-liter turbo with an electric motor rated at 402 hp.
  • Nissan says Europe is a possibility, but the truck remains under study.
  • The pickup was co-developed with Dongfeng and is largely a rebadged Z9.

A gap has lingered in Nissan’s European lineup since the Navara bowed out, and there is now a candidate to fill it. The Chinese-built Frontier Pro could be sold in Europe with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, stepping into that space. It may lack the cachet of the larger Frontier sold in North America, but there is enough here to warrant a proper look.

Developed with joint venture partner Dongfeng, the Frontier Pro made its debut in China this time last year, alongside confirmation it would serve as a global model. It reached Chinese showrooms in late 2025, yet has not surfaced in other markets. That may change. Speaking about the truck, Nissan divisional vice president Jordi Vila suggested Europe remains under consideration.

“The Frontier Pro PHEV is a pick-up which is under study,” Vila told Auto Express. “It’s a vehicle which we believe has potential for Europe.”

Of course, actually selling the Frontier Pro in Europe will require more than Nissan HQ giving it the green light. It would need to be developed to meet European standards at the automaker’s engineering center in the UK. That means ticking off local crash requirements and ensuring the plug-in hybrid system clears regulatory hurdles.

What Powers It?

The plug-in hybrid truck uses a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor integrated into the transmission. It delivers a combined 402 hp and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque, figures strong enough to rival the popular BYD Shark 6. It also includes an intelligent all-wheel drive system and an electromechanical rear differential lock, and has a quoted all-electric driving range of 84 miles (135 km).

Importantly, the Frontier Pro isn’t a bespoke model built from the ground up by the Nissan and Dongfeng partnership. Instead, it’s largely a rebadged version of the Dongfeng Z9 that premiered at the start of 2025. If it launches in Europe, other Dongfeng Nissan models could follow suit, including the NX8 sold in China.
