Tesla’s Newest Vehicle Has No Pedals, And Its Drivers Are Two To Five

Tesla’s Newest Vehicle Has No Pedals, And Its Drivers Are Two To Five
  • Tesla’s new balance bike for children costs $225 with orders opening July 31.
  • Lightweight magnesium-frame bike targets kids between two and five years old.
  • First orders are expected to begin shipping in late August.

Tesla has expanded its ever-growing collection of lifestyle products with something aimed at its youngest fans. The automaker’s latest creation is a $225 balance bike for children, and it doesn’t go on sale until July 31. Judging by the company’s track record, it may not stay available long. It’s modern, angular, and surprisingly nice based on the feature set and materials.

The balance bike is intended for children between two and five years old and features a lightweight magnesium frame finished with Tesla branding. The company says the design includes an adjustable seat with five height positions, allowing the bike to grow alongside its rider as they gain confidence before moving to a pedal bike. That seat is one of the coolest bits as it simply slides up and down the rear section of the bike to accommodate different riders.

According to Tesla, the minimum leg length is 13.7 inches (35 cm), while the recommended rider weight tops out at 66.1 pounds (30 kg). The absolute maximum weight limit is listed at 77.1 pounds (35 kg). Assembly is required, although Tesla says all necessary tools are included in the box. As the name suggests, the bike doesn’t have any pedals. Kids are meant to simply get a grip on balancing on two wheels while always having the ability to simply put their feet down to stop moving.

Tesla hasn’t reinvented the category here. Conventional balance bike retailers rarely charge this much but the most premium options out there will cost more than this. They’ll also offer a few more features. That said, Tesla has given the bike a clean, futuristic appearance that matches the company’s minimalist design language. A Tesla wordmark runs along the side of the frame, while a prominent “T” logo sits on the front.

The product page notes that orders will begin shipping in late August. Anyone set on getting one should mark the 31st, because Tesla’s limited-run lifestyle items have a habit of disappearing within hours of going live.
