Ford Shows Dealers A Real Four-Door Mustang Mach 4 For Less Than $40,000

Ford Shows Dealers A Real Four-Door Mustang Mach 4 For Less Than $40,000
  • Ford showed dealers a real four-door Mustang prototype in Vegas.
  • It marks the first physical Mach 4 shown, following a 2024 rendering.
  • It could compete with Chevrolet’s rumored four-door Camaro revival.

Ford’s decision to sit out the North American sedan segment left a void that has been felt for years. Now the Blue Oval is rethinking its position on passenger cars, and it plans to lean on one of its most iconic nameplates to do it. A four-door Mustang is back on the table, with a launch now expected for the 2029 model year.

Dealers Get A Look In Vegas

This is no longer a rumor built on sketches. Ford dealers were shown an early prototype in the metal at a private meeting in Las Vegas, with multiple attendees comparing its size and design to a Porsche Panamera, Autonews reports. It marks the first time Ford has put a physical prototype in front of dealers, following a rendering shown back in 2024. The company used the Mach 4 name to identify the Mustang sedan at the time and has since trademarked it.

Ford’s pitch to the room came with actual numbers attached. Executives told attendees, who asked not to be identified, that the four-door Mustang would start under $40,000, clear 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in less than four seconds, and give rear passengers more room to stretch out than a Panamera, according to Autonews.

Speculation about a new body style variant for the pony car is far from new. Back in September 2022 and during the reveal of the seventh-generation S650 Mustang, a sketch of a four-door model was included in the official material.

The Mustang remains the only non-SUV and non-truck offering in Ford’s current North American lineup, but executives have gradually softened their stance against sedans. Ford Blue and Model e president Andrew Frick has acknowledged that while the segment has shrunk dramatically, a stubborn core of buyers still wants a traditional car footprint.

At the same time, Ford CEO Jim Farley has said the brand would happily grow the Mustang family as long as any new derivative keeps the character, attitude, and performance of the original. Put those two statements side by side and you have a solid case for a Mustang-branded sedan.

An S650 Underneath?

Earlier reports floated the possibility of a fully electric platform shared with Ford’s new Fathom electric truck, but the company may have another route in mind. According to a MotorTrend report that landed before the dealer meeting, the Mach 4 will likely use an elongated version of the S650 architecture.

Reworking an existing rear-wheel-drive platform is far cheaper than developing a new one, which helps Ford trim R&D spending while keeping combustion engines alive for longer. The muscle car platform also suits an American sedan far better than the front-wheel-drive underpinnings of the Chinese-built Ford Mondeo, sold in the Middle East as the Taurus.

MotorTrend suggests the powertrain menu could mirror the Mustang’s, including the turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder and the naturally aspirated 5.0-liter Coyote V8, with room for high-output versions. The bigger draw is that the V8 could be paired with a manual gearbox, a genuine selling point for enthusiasts.

Ford’s current product strategy is a sharp turn from its old mass-market sedan playbook. Instead of chasing thin margins with commuter cars like the departed Focus and Fusion, the automaker is using passion-driven badges like Mustang and Bronco to reach higher-margin corners of the market. Farley recently called the current lineup “the most passionate” the company has ever had.

Detroit Gears Up For A Muscle Sedan Rematch

The Mach 4’s arrival could reignite an old Detroit rivalry. General Motors is reportedly cooking up its own plan to revive the Chevrolet Camaro as a new RWD, ICE-powered four-door, setting up a rematch between cross-town rivals in a segment most people had written off. The Dodge Charger sedan would be another direct target, since it is adding a V8 alongside its existing six-cylinder and electric options.

Ford has not committed to a debut date for the Mach 4, but production could start sometime between 2028 and 2029. With any luck, the company will give us something to chew on with early teasers and spy shots before then.
