Facelifted BMW M5 Spied Hauling Its Heavy Body Around The Nurburgring

Facelifted BMW M5 Spied Hauling Its Heavy Body Around The Nurburgring
  • Fresh spy shots show a camouflaged M5 sedan during testing.
  • The mid-lifecycle update will add Neue Klasse styling and tech.
  • The PHEV powertrain with 717 hp will likely carry over unchanged.

The BMW M5 is getting ready for its Life Cycle Impulse, with camouflaged prototypes going through the last stages of development testing and fine-tuning at the Nürburgring. Our spies sent us fresh shots of the facelifted M5 sedan, hinting at significant exterior and interior updates.

The current G90 generation of the M5 debuted in mid-2024 with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The facelifted version is expected to arrive in 2027, bringing it on par with the Neue Klasse lineup in terms of styling and technology.

From the outside, the biggest change will be the redesigned face with a shark-nose effect. The M5 will gain a slimmer kidney grille, refined bumper intakes and new LED headlights putting more emphasis on the flared fenders.

The profile will be largely carried over, but the rear end will feature new LED graphics for the elongated taillights alongside a reshaped bumper retaining the signature quad tailpipes on the rear diffuser. The current model has just received a lighter set of 20- and 21-inch alloy wheels from the M Performance catalogue, which will likely remain available after the facelift.

The high-performance model will also benefit from an overhauled interior. Earlier spy shots of the M5 Touring have given us a glimpse inside the cabin, revealing a larger infotainment display, a redesigned steering wheel, and the new BMW Panoramic iDrive pillar-to-pillar screen on the base of the windshield. This setup is similar to the new BMW i3, iX3, iX4, X5, and 3-Series which have already entered the Neue Klasse era.

Besides the notable changes, BMW M engineers are also trying to improve its driving dynamics with potential suspension tweaks. Despite its 2.5-ton weight, the new M5 has been praised for its handling, but there’s always room for improvement.

Under the hood, we expect a carry-over plug-in hybrid setup comprising a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8, a single electric motor, and a 18.6 kWh battery pack. The combined output of 717 hp (535 kW / 727 PS) and 738 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) of torque allows the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint to be completed in 3.5 seconds for the sedan and 3.6 seconds for the Touring.

The BMW M5 prototypes will likely start shedding some of their camouflage wrap over the next weeks or months. A leaked photo of the facelifted 5-Series sedan from the factory floor has recently surfaced online, hinting at an imminent debut.
